Tortioses Of The World Essay Research Paper free essay sample

Tortioses Of The World Essay, Research Paper I choose this subject of tortoises because I have four of my ain. I would wish to larn more about them and possibly different types of things I could make to do their lives better. I have Desert Tortoises but I would besides wish to larn approximately many other types of tortoises and their forms and sizes. I have four large tortoises and four babe tortoises. Sammy, Scooter, Grumpy, Red, and the four babes which are about five months old. A adult male at the Water District gave us are first tortoise Sammy. Soon coming that twelvemonth we found Grumpy on the side of the main road with a large cleft in his dorsum. We took him place fed him so took him to the veterinarian early the following forenoon. They patched him up and we got to take him home but we had to give him a shooting every repast for about a month. We will write a custom essay sample on Tortioses Of The World Essay Research Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page That # 8217 ; s where he got his name he didn T like the shootings much and would conceal off in a corner after them. Water scooter and Red are Desert Tortoises but a different sort. They are more egg-shaped shaped which gives us more of a assortment. They seem to wish fruit more. Sammy and Grumpy mated and Sammy laid her eggs in a deep tunnel between two stones. The eggs hatched someplace in between 70 to one hundred and 20 yearss. We found the first babe tortoise in the front pace and that # 8217 ; s when we knew we had to hold a complete hunt of our backyard and the forepart for the first twenty-four hours before we blocked up even the tiniest of holes in the Gatess with wood. We searched the paces for approximately two hebdomads merely in instance of any of them were concealing. We found five sum but one was already dead in the route. It was ran over by a auto yearss earlier before we found the first tortoise. The other four are healthy and turning bigger mundane. We feed them in the afternoon when I get place from school or when my ma gets off work. They non merely walk slow but they eat slow excessively. I think it s a great experience to have Desert Tortoises and if you can I would acquire one for yourself. Tortoises are in the household of the Testudinidae. Tortoises live on land and are largely vegetarian reptilians. A few signifiers of Omnivorous. In some topographic points tortoises represent awkwardness, finding, and long life. There are about 41 life species of tortoises. The bulk of them live in Africa and Madagascar. Some ways you can state the reptilian is a tortoise are by their high dome like shells, heavy elephant-like hind legs in which their toes are really short and do non hold any webbing, and hard scaled front legs. The colour of a tortoise is largely sunglassess of brown, olive, xanthous and black, brown and black, largely xanthous, scutes plain or normally patterned with bright beams or homocentric rings. They have leathery to brittle shells depending on the tortoise. Some of the types of tortoises could be the species of the Giant Tortoises. They are now rare or nonextant because adult male destroyed their home grounds or because hogs, caprine animals, or rats ate their babes. Some of the Giant Tortoise weights have been recorded as about one hundred 80 kgs. Another species is the Gopher Tortoise. They have brown shells and are accomplished diggers. This is because their front legs are much flatter and service as delving scoops. These tortoises live in sandy and wooded parts of the Southern United States. The Desert Tortoise lives in desert and open wooded countries around the South Western United States and Mexico. Berlandiers Tortoise is close comeuppances and wooded countries of Texas and parts of Northern Mexico. There is besides a recent find of a tortoise called the Bophenus Flauomorginatum. It has merely been located in a little country in North Central Mexico. A tortoises shell has 59 to 61 castanetss in it. It has two parts a shell and a plastron enchantress covers it s belly. So successful was the shell that it became a basis of tortoise architecture. Because of the shell they can non run, leap, or fly. Tortoise shells typically are high-vaulted shells as protection from their marauders oppressing jaws. One type of tortoise that does non hold a high shell but a highly planate one is the African Pancake. This allows that tortoise to squash into little clefts in between stones where they have their home ground. When a tortoise has become wedged in between something they become highly difficult to draw out. Another portion of a shell could be a hinged plastron. Madagascar and Egyptian Tortoises have developed one or two plastral flexible joints and the African Hinge-backed Tortoises have a flexible joint on the shell instead than on their plastron. Hinges give tortoises the Bachelor of Arts ility to tightly shut their shell with all their parts with in. This provides protection from loss of wet. Most tortoises attain a maximal size of at least five inches in shell length. The Dotted Cape Tortoise have a maximal shell length of less than four point seven inches. They are among the universes smallest tortoises. One of the universes largest tortoises is the Aldabra Giant Tortoise at 55 inches and five 100s and 59 lbs. Surely most tortoises, with their ability to travel held back by their large shells are slow. The Desert Tortoise moves at velocities of zero point 13 to zero point three stat mis per hr. The Galapagos Giant Tortoise was clocked at four stat mis per twenty-four hours. When tortoises mate it typically consists of some caput bobbing, the male butting and seize with teething the female to immobilise her, and eventually mounting her shell from the rear. The female tortoise so buries her eggs under land. My Desert Tortoise buried her eggs in her place which was a under land tunnel. Once the eggs are hatched tonss of reptilians leave their childs to fend for themselves but the Burmese Brown Tortoise which lays her eggs in a hill of foliage litre, will support her eggs from predation for several yearss after she has laid them. Tortoises eggs are elongated to spherical form, one to two point five inches is the greatest diameter. Egg size seems to increase with body size but there are some exclusions. The Galapagos Giant Tortoise lay the largest spherical eggs, with diameters of two to two point four inches. Incubation typically requires about two months. Incubation clip besides depend on the temperature. Temperature can find the velocity but it can besides find the sex of some species of tortoises. Tortoises normally feed on flora like roses, trefoil, Spinacia oleracea, and blowball or on more sedentary animate beings like worms, snails or insect larvae. Because of their velocity they can t catch fast traveling quarry. Besides fruit off a tree can pull big Numberss of tortoises. Some of these fruits could include apricots, alligator pear, bananas, berries, oranges, Prunus persicas and pears. Tortoises like to eat veggies, some of those could be chou, carrots, maize, peas, green beans, squash, and courgette. There are besides toxicant things you can feed your tortoise. Don t feed them workss like aloe, Hedera helix, Narcissus pseudonarcissus, foxglove, gardenia, holly, retem, mistle toe, marigold, mushrooms, rhododendron, and sweet pea. From my ain experience tortoises like to eat Brassica oleracea italica, apples, hibiscus flowers, grapes, tomatoes with out the seeds, H2O melon and their favourite boodle, which is a good beginning for H2O. Tortoises have one or two saw-toothed ridges on their jaws enchantress are used for cutting and oppressing roots and fruits. If a tortoise happened to eat a toxicant works above some of marks of unwellness would be fluid or bubbly nose, loss of appetency, and panting. If a tortoise has these symptoms you should reach a veterinary. Around the month of October tortoises will look sulky, remain outside less, and they will eat less. This is the clip that tortoises go into hibernation. Tortoises like to hole up in tunnels normally ten to eighteen pess deep. Tortoises will frequently eat a batch before hibernation and they will hive away the excess fat on their legs. Around March or April the tortoises will come out of hibernation. You should give them a warm bath. They will frequently imbibe a batch of H2O, this is normal. Within the following few hebdomads they will return to their normal activities of feeding, exerting, and sunbathing. It is said that tortoises don t defend their districts but a tortoise called the Galapagos Giant Tortoise establishes laterality based on the tallness to hex each animate being can lodge out its caput. Populations of many tortoises are worsening today. Over development and home ground devastation are the two chief causes. Tortoises, because of their handiness and big size have been utilised to a great extent as a protein resource on the island states. Peoples have besides been killing off tortoises by supplying luxury points such as tortoise shell jewellery and as pets. Tortoises slowness do them susceptible to human predetation at all times. I enjoyed composing about this subject. I learned tonss of interesting facts that might assist me raise my tortoises and cool facts like who was the biggest tortoise in the universe and the smallest tortoise in the universe. The Tortoise is a really great animal. It s been alive longer than I have. I hope they outlive my life-time and many after that.

buy custom Therapeutic Recreation essay

buy custom Therapeutic Recreation essay Therapeutic recreation involves the provision of both Treatment Services and Recreation Services to people suffering from illness and those who have conditions that are disabling. The primary purposes of such treatment and therapy are to remediate, restore or rehabilitate so as to improve independence and functioning and as well as eliminate or reduce the effects of the disability or illness. It provides recreational opportunity and resources that aim at improving the well being and health of the patients. Recreation therapist are trained and certified. They must also be registered and certified in order to practice therapeutic recreation. By using education treatment and recreation services, therapeutic recreation helps persons with disabilities, illness and other medical conditions to use and develop the activities they do for leisure to improve their functional abilities, independence, health and the quality of lives they live. This specialized area in the recreation field focuses mainly on providing either leisure and recreational services or preventive measures to avoid developing further complications or disabilities. The services may be provided in community or clinical setting. The goal is to ensure the participation of the client and be able to adopt a healthy and balanced leisure lifestyle. Therapeutic recreation usually involve the assessment of the client, formulation of necessary treatment plans that will accurately and effectively the areas of intervention, implementation of developed treatment plan, documentation of the clients progress on regular basis and evaluation of the effectiveness of the interventions being implemented. Recreational Therapists use leisure activities, recreational activities, art, drama, movement, music, writing and verbal processes as tools help facilitate their clients healing and growth. This enables the clients to acquire and develop their knowledge, skills and behav iors allowing them to optimize on their leisure activities, be independently functional with least or no assistance as possible. This will then enable them to fully participate in the normal society. Therapeutic Recreation Settings Therapeutic recreation is offered in different areas depending of their proximity to the individual and the specialty of the interventions being implemented on the individual. There are various setting to choose from. Hospitals are the main and the most specialized and equipped of the centers. They have highly trained therapist with enormous experience and knowledge. They deal with critical and more demanding situations. The services are both available in public and private hospitals. The second area where one can find therapeutic recreation are the inpatient rehabilitation centre. Like hospitals these are also very well equipped and have skilled professionals. These centers have boarding facilities with required number of bed spaces. Most of them are specialized to deal with just specific illness or disabilities. Inpatient rehabilitation centers are mainly setup and funded by the governments. However there are few of these rehabilitations centers that are privately owned (Carter, 20 11). Patients with situations that are not very serious are usually treated on a day time basis. These patients stay at there homes but will meet regularly with their therapist in outpatient health car. They are to be brought in by their relatives, friends and are sometimes even picked from home with the organizations vehicles. The outpatients are preferred by many people as it still gives the patients the love of the family and also is comfortable compared using inpatient rehabilitation facilities. They are also relatively each and can be afforded by many. Adult and youth correctional facilities are also used to offer therapeutic recreation to their members. Because of the difficult situation most in mates live in they are prone to illness especially those caused by stress and also some of them either get disabled in there by other inmate or get behind the bars when they are already disabled. Therapeutic recreation is provided to these persons to help them adjust to the new environment. Older adults who are generally too old to walk long distances are provided with residential facilities. The experts visit them regularly and help them to turn their leisure activities into ways these old members of the societies can improve both their health and also increase their independence from their relatives. This is done to ensure that the old live in comfortable live and do not require much attention from the other family members living them with adequate time to involve in economic activities. Other places where therapeutic recreation is done are the schools, day programs fro the elderly and community based agencies. Day program is open to the elderly with or without disability or illness. The community based agencies however deal mainly with persons with disabilities. Clients Served Therapeutic facilities cater for a wide range of problems among people. Physical disabilities (both in adults and children) can be a major problem to them and also a source of discomfort to their normal daily activities. These people with disabilities live difficult life as they are not able to access the normal facilities available to every one. The main disabilities are blindness, non functional limbs or amputated limps after an accident or diseases like cancer. Mental illness also requires therapeutic recreation. People with these problems are very critical because if they are not handled carefully their problem may develop and leads to the insanity of the individual. Mental illness may result from various situations like long sickness, stress, depressions like death of a loved one and also from accidentals blows of the head of and individual. Diseases that affect nervous system will lead to mental illness easily. Therapeutic recreation is also given to individuals with intellectual and development disabilities. These are people who do not act normally as expected of people of that age. This is due to slow or incomplete development of their brain. The patient will usually have problems relating to other members of the society who most of the times discriminate against them. Other members of the society that will need therapeutic recreation services are youths that are at risk of being badly influence by their peers, both juvenile and adult offenders, the elderly people with limitations, persons who frequently have emotions problems, all the elderly receiving long term care and persons with alcohol and other substance abuse problems. Roles and Responsibilities of aRecreation Therapist Conducting assessment on the clients situation is their first and very important duty.. They carry out the assessment to determine the exact condition of the patients. This will determine whether the situation is very critical or it is still a beginning problem. Very critical situation will be dealt for quickly to avoid further endangering of the patients life. Their second responsibility is to develop, implement and evaluate the implemented the intervention plans. Intervention plans are those ways the therapist will use to solve the patients problems. This are developed to fit each situation with references to former success in similar problems. The therapist usually takes this serious as wrong intervention plan will mean time wastage and further enhancement of the problem. Being a professional the therapist is responsible for any wrong decision he makes. After assessing the patient the therapist will then provide a functional intervention program whether it involves pet therapy, horticulture therapy, aquatic therapy and adventure challenge therapy. The therapist also oversees and facilitates the leisure or recreation education program. He or she will ensure that the plan is implemented to the letter and necessary changes made as any new situation arises. He or she will continue to assess the patient to see if the method is succeeding. This will also involve him documenting the entire patients condition on a chart and analyze them frequently (Robertson, 2008). Therapists also conduct research on the effectiveness of various intervention plans used as part of therapeutic recreation. Being the people on the ground, they are capable of getting very accurate data and with little effort. These finding can then be sued to find out successful intervention methods and on what condition. They will then serve as future reference base when determining intervention plans for similar or closer cases in the future. Most corrective centers, and also schools, have therapists on their interdisciplinary teams. They serve the as counsel and guidance and are involved in correct behaviors of the people who are believed to beyond the normal corrective systems. They also give advice to the committee on how certain inmates or students can be handled to avoid their further rebel to the authority. Therapists are also involved in advocating for the profession and encouraging more people to enter the profession. Costs of therapeutic recreation Therapeutic method is a relatively expensive way to of treatment to patients. It involves a program that runs for long and in some cases will even go all the remaining life of the patient. The process also involves more direct contact of the therapist and the patient which means that payment are higher. Because of this governments offer subsidized rates in their facilities and also provide food for those in inpatient care. Government also introduced the system into various departments like education and corrective centers to problems are dealt with early to avoid expensive method being used. Conclusion With continued rise in health and disability problems that tend to alienate the victims from the society, therapeutic recreation has been a success and is still the fundamental way to deal with the problems. Therapist are now more involved in trying to avoid situations that can easily be prevented from arising rather than waiting to tackle the situation. This has increased the success of therapeutic recreation. Buy custom Therapeutic Recreation essay

Ancient Remains †Fossil DNA of Former Life

Ancient Remains – Fossil DNA of Former Life News that scientists had recovered actual marrow from a dinosaur fossil aroused much amazement. But the achievement is not a surprise. In fact, it doesnt even set a new record for the oldest pieces of life. Most of us think of fossils as dead things that have been petrified, turned to stone. But that doesnt have to be. The actual bodies of once-living things can escape being petrified for a very long time under the right conditions. A fossil is defined as any evidence of life from the prehistoric or geologic past that is preserved in the Earths crust. A prejudice against preservation may have kept scientists from looking for meat in the ancient bones, but now we know better, and a race is on to find ever-older tissues. Creatures in Ice Ãâ€"tzi, the 5,000-year-old ice man found in an Alpine glacier in 1991, is the best-known example of a frozen fossil. Mammoths and other extinct polar animals are also known from permafrost. These fossils are not as pretty as the food in your freezer, as they undergo a kind of slow mummification in the frozen condition. Its a geologic version of freezer burn in which ice migrates out of the tissues into the surroundings. Frozen bison bones nearly 60,000 years old were analyzed in 2002, yielding DNA fragments and bone proteins that could be compared to existing species. Mammoth hair turns out to be even better than bones for preserving DNA. But Antarctica holds the record in this field, with microbes in deep ice that are 8 million years old. Dried Remains The desert preserves dead matter by desiccation. Ancient humans have been naturally mummified this way, such as the 9,000-year-old Nevadan known as Spirit Cave Man. Older material is preserved by various desert packrats, which have the habit of making piles of plant matter cemented into rock-hard bricks by their viscous urine. When preserved in dry caves, these packrat middens can last tens of thousands of years. The beauty of packrat middens is that they can yield deep environmental data about the American West during the late Pleistocene: vegetation, climate, even the cosmic radiation of the times. Similar middens are being studied in other parts of the world. Even the remains of extinct creatures still exist in dried form. Mammoths are most famous for their permafrost carcasses, but mammoth dung is known from desiccated specimens. Amber Of course Jurassic Park put amber in the public consciousness with its plot based on the idea of retrieving dinosaur DNA from blood-sucking insects trapped in amber. But progress toward that movies scenario is slow and possibly stopped. Lots of different creatures are documented from amber, from frogs and insects to bits of plants. But the published DNA retrievals have not yet been duplicated. Perfect Fossils In a few places plant matter has been preserved in sediment for many millions of years. The Clarkia beds of northern Idaho are between 15 and 20 million years old, putting their origin in the Miocene Epoch. Tree leaves can be split from these rocks still displaying their seasonal colors, green or red. Biochemicals including lignins, flavonoids,  and aliphatic polymers can be extracted from these fossils, and DNA fragments are known from fossil liquidambar, magnolias and tulip trees (Liriodendron). The current champions in this field are the Eocene dawn-redwood forests of Axel Heiberg Island, in the Canadian Arctic. For about 50 million years the stumps, logs, and foliage of these trees have been preserved almost totally unmineralized, thanks to swift burial in conditions that kept oxygen out. Today this fossil wood lies on the ground, ready to pick up and burn. Tourists and coal miners alike threaten this scientific treasure. Dinosaur Marrow Mary Schweitzer, the North Carolina State University professor who documented soft tissues  in Tyrannosaurus rex leg bones, has been exploring biomolecules in ancient fossils for several years. The presence of those in the 68-million-year-old bones was not the oldest of her finds, but actual tissues of this age are unprecedented. The discovery challenges our notions of how fossils form. Surely more examples will be found, perhaps in existing museum specimens. Salt Microbes A startling Nature paper in 2000 reported the revival of bacterial spores from a brine pocket in a salt crystal in a Permian salt bed in New Mexico, some 250 million years old. Naturally, the claim brought criticism: the laboratory or the salt bed was contaminated, and in any case, the DNA of the microbes (the genus Virgibacillus) was too close a match to more recent species. But the discoverers have defended their technique and raised other scenarios  for the DNA evidence. And in the April 2005 Geology they published evidence from the salt itself, showing that it (1) matches what we know of Permian seawater and (2) appears to date from the time of the salts formation, not a later event. For now, this bacillus holds the title of Earths oldest living fossil.

IT163 Unit 5 BD - Research Paper Example The join condition brings the relationship between the rows of one table and the rows of another table. The join query enables a query to select any number of columns from more than two tables (Connolly, & Begg, 2005). If two of these tables have a column which share the same name, then all the qualifying name attributes of the columns will be used so that the queries will have the name of the table that is used. Join query come in many flavors according to the location where the join query will be located. There are conditions that join query will work. A join query will either work under WHERE clause or FROM clause. These are the conditions that will enable join queries to work. This is in aimportant aspect which should be looked into when undertaking and creating join queries. In an example where there are two tables holding persons information and the order information, if one wants to get some data from the two tables (Connolly, & Begg,

Historical and political relation of anthropology with human rights Essay Example for Free

Historical and political relation of anthropology with human rights Essay From the onset, it is necessary to define anthropology as the social science that is involved with studying the inherent relationship patterns and origins of human beings. As a juxtaposition, the concept of human rights refers to the intrinsic freedoms and rights to which all and sundry (human beings) are entitled, if only by virtue of belonging to the human race, and these are broadly categorized into two main classifications, including the socio-cultural and economic rights, which pertain to the rights to education, food, work and participate in culture. The other distinct grouping of rights and freedoms are those of civil and political nature, encompassing the ideology of people being equal before the law, the right to liberty and life, and also, the freedom to freely express oneself, provided that this does not interfere with that of other people. It is noteworthy that the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights – a non-binding declaration by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 reiterates the equality of all humans as relates to their rights and dignity, further acknowledging that each individual was equipped with the vital tools of a rational conscience and logical reasoning, and thus, all subsequent inter-personal relationships ought to reflect a communal spirit of brotherly co-existence. This cognition is widely viewed as being the framework for justice, peace and freedom in the globe today (Goodale, 2004:18-29). From a historical perspective, the anthropologist is more concerned with deciphering the linkage between the afore-mentioned rights and the prevailing localized cultures, from whence an understanding of the basic outline of social justice against a backdrop of cultural relativism is investigated. The general concession is that indeed, deliberation into the historical aspects of anthropology reveals a contribution to both the practical and theoretical facets of human rights workings. Select case studies closely related to this postulation include the current crisis in the Middle East, pitting the Israelis against the inhabitants of the Gaza strip, the Rwandan genocide (Bowman, 2000:31-49) and the topical issue of gay rights in Southern Africa. The former predicament entails Israel devastating, over the recent past, a population of some 1. million inhabitants in Gaza, with their arms tied behind their backs, owing to the fact that there is no active army in Gaza. Statistics reveal that close to 1300 Palestinian casualties are on record, as opposed to a measly 13 Israelis in the raging conflict, largely regarded as a modern day case of ‘ethnic cleansing’. Since the year 2006, Israel placed a blockade into the Gaza region, thus inhibiting the delivery of necessities such as medicine, food and fuel. Previous attempts to foster harmony and well-being in the region, with cease-fires being disrespected severally, have led up to the present situation in which the stakeholders in the conflict, chief amongst which is the Hamas, the Islamic Palestinian socio-political faction that has been in control of the Gaza strip, and Israel itself, have agreed to permanently seek a lasting solution to avoid more bloodshed. The possible recommendations to aid in arriving at a peaceful co-existence is scenario where Israel takes the front row in ensuring a sense of hope to the Palestinians, via the action of taking the political risk and dismantling the illegal West Bank Settlements. On their part, Palestinians should institute measures to ensure they elect purposive leaders into power, if only to militate against the eventuality of history repeating itself iteratively. Hamas should in turn cease firing missiles into Israel, which only serve to wound and kill majority of the innocent civilians, and the large scale smuggling of arms, so as to avoid the likelihood of the situation degenerating into another â€Å"United States versus Al Qaeda† affair. Also, the other stakeholders in the conflict, namely Jordan and Egypt, should seal all loopholes that enable the military exploits of the Hamas to fall through. This being said, the International community should actively ensure they do not turn a deaf ear to the conflict, to be spearheaded by the United Nations and the European Union. The latter, in detail, involved South Africa holding its second, fully democratic elections in the year 1999, which were characterized by the recognition of a wide array of groups and previously neglected factions of the population, such as the gay and lesbian community. Earlier on, the country made history by pioneering non-discrimination on the basis of an individual’s sexual orientation, with gay and lesbian activists championing their cause by widely challenging the very constitutionality of laws that infringed on their freedoms, organizing workshops to educate voters on their rights, plus lobbying for the drafting and resultant implementation of rules and legislations guaranteeing equity in the rights of all citizens (Goodale, 2004:43-54). They also went a step further and created working relationships with non-governmental organizations like the Human Rights Commission and the Commission on Gender Equality, in addition to forming outreach programmes for the members of the gay and lesbian community, especially those that lived in townships. Of particular note is the fact that sodomy has been decriminalized before the South African courts, thus recording another victory in the war for adequate recognition of this community. Of significance is the assertion that, these developments were achieved even with the realization that the South African populace was still divided along ethnic and racial boundaries (Riches, 1986:16-29), and more importantly, within the indigenous cultural groupings in the country, homosexuality is deemed non-existent, or on the best case scenario, a foreign acquisition. Thus, in a nutshell, this case study can be assessed from the view that it not only shapes social patterns, but also, it is instrumental in the democratization of regimes, as influenced by the civil society. Yet another occurrence was witnessed in an iconic court case in Japan (2008), involving the challenging of the historical definition of whom the concept of â€Å"human rights† is meant to apply. The immediate bone of contention was that the court of the day had proceeded to expand the rights of the children of Japanese fathers and non-Japanese mothers to claim Japanese citizenship, and thus by extension, such definition by the justices in the case served to only ensure the protection of the fundamental human rights of Japanese citizens, excluding those of other non-citizens. In this way, this can be said to expressly alienate those people who did not have papers certifying their Japanese citizenship. However, this ought not to be the case, as the rights in question should be guaranteed to every human being, as the very name suggests. In a publication by one Professor Jones regarding this case, he posits that there is a sorry state of affairs in Japan, citing that the tendency of the Sovereign state to mediate the citizens’ claims against each other should be sharply contrasted against the Anglo-American system, which is characterized by human rights being the limiting factor of the state’s power over individuals. In this way, the case is illustrative of how culture and history can affect and/or influence human rights in society (Kurtz, 2001: 43-52). Whilst still appreciating the historical contribution of anthropology to human rights, it is worthwhile to take mention of the concept of hegemony, defined as the utter domination of a state over its allies, and how this has over time influenced historical changes, especially on the cultural frontier. As a focal point, hegemony facilitates the comprehension of power within the confines of routine daily activities, as may be underpinned by cultural (customary) practices (Asad, 1991:13-27). On a more positive note, it is fit to state that the anthropological theory has over the years succeeded to come up with a contested, unbounded and widely flexible supposition of the term, which consequently goes a long way in uncovering the cultural understandings and how these in turn shape power relations, naturalizing domination and acting to suppress different manifestations of resistance in the society (Gledhill, 2000:29-44). Again, drawing from the South African example, although in a different context, it can be established that, quite ironically, the evangelical work of missionaries can be termed as being part of hegemony, although it heightened societal consciousness, going on to spark a form of resistance that gave rise to the awareness of the black community, fuelling the fight against apartheid. Of particular contention is the debate whether, as an interpretive issue, resistance in society should require consciousness and be collective in nature, or whether on the other hand, an end of attaining justice should be envisioned from the onset. Also, it is disputable whether the concept at hand should be extended to incorporate such actions as may be influenced by a sense of non-cooperation or discontent. In the recent past, there has been great agitation in the anthropological circles, wherein the concept of culture has been scrutinized in detail. Earlier anthropologists focused chiefly on societies that were virtually unaffected by factors such as colonial influences, for example, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel since, today, greater emphasis is being laid on flexibility of the frame of thought of culture, as afore-mentioned, now not only being affiliated to habits and daily practices of a people, but also, being engrained in the values they abide to and the ideas subscribed to. In other instances, there have been historical documentations of indigenous communities confronting resistance from the perspective of laying claim to various resources, more so when these individuals are challenged to prove an authentic affiliation to the culture under consideration (Rejali, 1994:49-60); disqualification usually results from the assertion that certain social groups have already undergone cultural changes. In a strange twist, it can be seen that the concept of ‘culture’, as formulated by twentieth century anthropologists in a bid to champion the rights of small-scale communities in the wake of colonialism and other civilizing projects, has in present times been apposite to differing political ends of resisting reform in certain sectors and turning a deaf ear to the claims of indigenous people’s claims to reparation (compensation). On a transitional note, the political inclination of anthropology to human rights can be deduced by critical analysis of the two disciplines (Cohen, 1978:34-57). Such relationship necessitates a vivid conception of the said human rights within a template of anthropologically conceived ideas or principles. A brief intermission here is the appreciation that, as an academic discipline, anthropology seeks to study the various forms and bases of human unity and relative diversity, while the other side of this coin practically applies the acquired knowledge to actively solve problems that may plague the human race (Gledhill, 2000:59-83). This being the situation, politically-oriented anthropologists should concern themselves with instances where the denial of certain rights is pegged on the differences in one human aspect or the other. The validity of using ‘human difference’ as an indicator of human rights is that it incorporates the very specificity of what we as humans be it collectively or from an individual stance – have evolved to be, both culturally and socially. It is worth noting that the term ‘difference’, as applied in this context, refers to the linguistic, socio-cultural and/or biological characteristics of people, relative to the initial human capacities that facilitated their production in the first place. On the flipside, as may relate to human rights, these ‘differences’ may principally represent the products of the realization of social relations, personal identities and cultural forms (Goodale, 2004:98-110). The general implication of the above argumentation is that specific human rights may be advocated for by calling upon the trans-cultural, but positive, right to difference. This analogy can be stretched further still by acknowledging the unwritten law that anthropologists who study and research instances of societal injustices and assorted cases of human rights abuses do, in the actual sense, bear an ethical obligation to find lasting solutions to these predicaments. In particular, those working with marginal and/or indigenous communities shoulder the responsibility of supporting these groups by all means available, including advocacy as mentioned above (Fried, 1967:61-69).

Individuality vs Community in Shirley Jacksons The Lottery Essay

Individuality versus Community in The Lottery    The works of Shirley Jackson tend to the macabre because she typically unveils the hidden side of human nature in her short stories and novels.   She typically explores the darker side of human nature.   Her themes are wide-ranging and border on the surreal though they usually portray everyday, ordinary people.   Her endings are often not a resolution but rather a question pertaining to society and individuality that the reader must ask himself or herself.   Jackson's normal characters often are in possession of an abnormal psyche.   Children are portrayed as blank slates ready to learn the ways of the world from society.   However, adults have a hidden side already formed and lurking beneath the perceived normality of the established social order.   We see this best in Jackson's most famous short story, The Lottery.   Jackson's uses many elements of fiction to demonstrate how human nature can become desensitized to the point of mob murder of a member of their own com munity.   One of the ways she does this is through character.   While the shocking reason behind the lottery and the gruesome prize for its winner are not received until the ending, the characters come back to haunt us for their desensitized behavior earlier in the story.   For example, the children in the beginning of the story innocently gather stones as normal children might, yet their relish in doing so becomes macabre once we find out the purpose for which that are collecting them "Bobby Martin hard already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroy...eventually made a great pile of stones in one ... ...re many similarities when it comes to technique, characterization, themes, and ideologies based on the author's own beliefs and life experiences.   However, we also see that it appears the author herself often struggles with the issue of being herself and expressing her own individuality, or obeying the rules, regulations and mores of a society into which she was born an innocent child, one who by nature of her sex was deemed inferior to men who controlled the definition of the norms.   We see this kind of environment as repressive and responsible for abnormal psyches in the plots of many of her works. Islam in Seven Pages Essay

Islam is regarded as one of the world’s top religions in terms of denomination. It has been practiced around the world for almost all known human history. Followers of the Islam religion are all over the globe, present in almost every country. They are people whom we encounter or may encounter in our daily lives. Islam followers had been victims to reckless stereotyping and false assumptions. So to clear these up, it is just fair that we should at least take a peek into the subject and try to understand the nature of Islam. The Early Years of the Prophet Muhammad A simple man, destined to be one of the greatest man that ever lived. Once, there was political instability and restlessness among the people Arabia. People became far from God and care less if they are. They are worshiping idols and false gods. The situation is much like what the whole world is experiencing in the present era. A simple man, a working-class type of man, was chosen by the one God himself, to carry out the messages of God to relieve the world from its impurities that are causing its own miseries. Muhammad entered the world in 570 A. D. The name Muhammad literally translates as â€Å"praiseworthy. † Unfortunately for the young Muhammad, his father died just four months after his birth and his mother departed when he was only six years of age. He was an orphan, and so his uncle took care of him. He worked as a shepherd boy for his neighbors and a camel driver, traversing the Arabia-Syria route for his uncle. Through hard-work and dedication, He did well in the business of handling trade caravans for merchants. His clients gave him the nickname â€Å"Al-Amin† which means â€Å"trustworthy. † Through this career, his travels paved the way for him to be in contact with people of other nationalities and faith. When he reached the age of 25, he was employed by Khadija, a wealthy widow, who later on became his wife. The couple enjoyed a happy and loving marriage. A man having many wives was a common practice during that time, but Muhammad had only one wife, even when after she passed away only 24 years after their marriage. Tragedy has gotten its fair share with this man. He had his ups and downs, much like everyone else in this planet. But something great was destined for this man. He is soon to be experiencing an encounter of divine proportions. The Prophet’s Life in Mecca During Muhammad’s late 30’s, he developed the habit of taking regular visits to a cave in Mount Hira, located in the outskirts of Mecca, to mediated and find solitude away from the problems of society. In 610 A. D, during the time Khadija was still alive, in one of his visits he rushed to their home telling his wife that an angel appeared before him. His wife was initially shocked but later on became his first convert. It was Angel Gabriel that appeared before him. The angel told him that God commands him to proclaim His word among his fellow human beings. He was reluctant to follow the command at first. He sees himself as just a normal person. He fearfully replied that he is not fit for the job. The angel commanded that Muhammad must speak for God to his people. Speak about His message that He will teach humanity what we do not know. And about God’s incomparable glory and generosity to his creations. The angel continued to visit him. Khadija supported his husband through this experience. Muhammad managed to be convinced and confident that it is truly God that had chosen him to deliver the holy message. Since then, Muhammad was burdened the holy mission of delivering God’s words to His people. Muhammad was assigned the holy mission to change the ways of his fellow countrymen. He conveyed the holy message that they should shun away from materialism, polytheism, immorality, and should only worship Allah as the only God. But during his conveyance of the holy message, he made it clear to the people that he is not a divine being of any kind, he is simply a prophet. He clearly stated that he is not able to perform miracles, only the one God is capable of such things. He was merely a messenger of God’s commands. Almost three years had passed and there were only forty converts to the faith. This is because many people in Mecca opposed the message because the kind of society they are indulging themselves is jeopardized. The people in Mecca won’t simply find it easy to give up their wealthy economic status and immoral indulgences. Muhammad’s early followers were heavily persecuted by Meccans who are yet to be converted and saved by the message. The persecution has led Muhammad to decide to move to Medina for safety. The Prophet’s Life in Medina Ironically, Muhammad was born into the Quraysh tribe. And this tribe was one of the first tribe to react violently to the holy message Muhammad conveyed. They had been very careful in keeping their migration to Medina unknown to the Quraysh tribe. They moved individually and in pairs to gradually complete the secret migration. During this time, the Quraysh tribe are considering their methods of action towards Muhammad. They’ve came up with imprisonment, exile, and the final decision was murder. The angry Meccans trailed Muhammad and his followers on their way to Medina. By the greace of God, they managed to escape the Meccans by hiding inside a cave. Upon their arrival at Medina, 73 converts pledged loyalty to Muhammad. During his first year in Medina, he authored the Constitution of Medina which is a formal agreement between him and the important tribes in the area. It is mainly concerned the rivalry of clans and to bring it into an end. As an effect, it bonded Muslim, Jewish and Pagans of Medina into a peaceful community. Muhammad later on led the Battle of Badr against the Quraysh. This was has been on-going for a long time and Muhammad’s victory is attributed to divine intervention. Muhammad was also a key factor in winning other battles over those in contention with the faith.

Describe how political, legal and social factors are impacting upon the business activities of the selected organisations and their stakeholders Essay

Describe how political, legal and social factors are impacting upon the business activities of the selected organisations and their stakeholders. Tesco In all the business in the country like Britain, they have to have this in mind that there are changes that are taking place in the business environment and to the people who maybe the shareholders. These changes can be the political, legal, and the social factors with the business environment and the country. Political factors of Tesco as a retail and a large business in Britain. Political factors are the decisions that are made by the politicians who have got all the powers to run the country and control over people and their business. The political factors have got three different levels that help to run the people, country and businesses. The national level: These levels consider is all about the political parties that protect the members of the parliament in the general elections. There is a party that is being led by the prime minister who appoints the ministers in charge of the key areas of the government e.g. Health of the people in the country, education, and also the industry which could be the businesses in the country to make sure they are running smoothly. The international level: Britain is a member of the European Union (EU). This level has got responsibility to make political decisions that increase the effect whatever decisions that done within the members of the states. The local level: This level consists of councils that are representatives of the population of the other people and make decisions about the local issues on behalf of the other local members. The local level has got all the people who help to set power for the people who are living in the particular area by providing protections to the people who are living area the council. These political decisions involve making choices that affect large numbers of people and their businesses. The decisions that are made by the politicians are making laws that will tend to favour or give chance to some groups at the expense of others. Some of the decisions that can be made maybe a favour the business like Tesco when the law is made / decided that every business will not be paying any taxes with whatever they are doing. That can be favour for the shareholders will be earning a lot from their business. But some decisions that are made sometimes may restrain business, e.g. when taxes of the business is raised this will be some of the down fall of the small businesses because the shareholders won’t be getting profits from what they have started in the business. The business will not be providing good services to the people who are the customers so their needs won’t be satisfied. These political factors have got some impacts factors to the business: Political stability: some times, the political stability favours the business. Within this political stability the political factor level that is used is the national level. This political level will find the way to put its plans into action that the people will have to fellow. The plans at the national level are made public to everyone to know it and they can be of good help to business planning. Tesco as a business can be able to use the government plans to identify the likely changes and how their plans that are made at nation level affect them in their business. This provides business with a degree of faith in whatever they are doing for the next few years for the business that has just been setup. Sometimes is political stability different leadership can be an effect to the business and the people in the country. This is when the elections are being taken in place and the president you hard before changed to another person’s which means all the rules and regulations that run the country or the business will have to change and that can be a bad thing to the people you are heading or the business you will be managing. This is all like having confidence in your business as a shareholder. if the education level is high in the area there will be more skilled workers and this will leads to high income. High income means demands for goods and services will increase. Taxation: this term means the money that each business pays on each product and that the business sale. The taxes are levied by the national government like with type of taxes called the income tax and the local government which may deal with the business rates with the products they are selling to the customers. Taxation has a very important purpose to the government because it helps it to raise revenue and also enables it to discourage many activities that the business do and encourage others by lowing the rates of taxes so that they can be able to start up. These are some of the examples of taxes that business use Corporation tax: This type of tax deals with taxes on the profits that are made by the companies like energy companies. Income tax: This type of tax is all about the income the people who are self employed like the sole traders and other people who get income like the employees in the business like the people working in the Tesco. National insurance: This is the required tax that is being paid for pensions like sickness, and unemployed benefits. This is given to the people who may have left their places of work for important reasons, like may be age, serious sickness and other things. VAT (value added tax): This type of tax is that tax that is added to the products that are needed and required by the business. So for example if Tesco needs a product from any business outside it, the price it costs will be added on by the Tesco business to get it and that’s called the vat. So it’s always on retail goods that are being bought and into the business. Customs duty: This is the type of tax that is paid by the business on the imports and the exports of the goods and services. The imports of Tesco as a business will be the goods that are not made and no produced by them. The exports will be the goods that Tesco will be made by the business themselves and they are living the out of the business to other country or to other business that not produce them. The government will have more powers to increase taxes on some of the goods that are sold by the business like cigarettes these are harmful things to human beings. They can because of diseases to people like lung cancer so the government will be fighting against the production of cigarettes by increasing the taxes on it so that people’s health can be better for them. The government can also make an increase of taxes on the fuel that is being used by cars and machines. The reason of this can be that many fuel oils are making smelly gases causing pollution and that can be bad effect to the people lives. Tesco has all both affects of people’s lives the cigarettes and fuel oil selling and so if the government is making tax increase on them the business will see taxes as high cost that takes and uses a lot of its profit from what they had planned for as business shareholders. Government provides direct support to specific types of business and specific activities in two different from grants and loans. A grant is that money that the government gives to a business and it’s not repaid. The main reason why the government provides this is because some business activity supports the government policy. The example here is that the government may give grants to employees to go and train others about business and the money that they have given out is not repaid back. The government also gives out loans to business on a specific purpose. The government loans are of interest rates whereby you borrow money from the banks and pay it back at an interest rate of more money rate you got it for. Government decision to join the European Union because the businesses in this country have got good things and bad things that can be of good help to other countries and their businesses. This is a good thing because trading can be freely without being charged for so there can be free importing and exporting of goods to and from the country. An impact on that can be that businesses have to be more competitive with other business if they want to have trade with the European Union business. This can lead the businesses to produce more and sell more at an affordable price so that they can get free trade market with others. Social factor Demographics The increase of people’s population in the country or area. This is like the number of people changing from the percentage of 90 to an increase of 100% increase of population in the place. Businesses sell more products and the shareholders get more profits. Due to the increase of customers, there will be high demand of products from the customers. More people in the area will lead to more setting up of new business whether big or small businesses from other people. Households and family Helps the business to know the peoples expenditure on how they spend since there many people living alone in house. Education All business needs to employ people who have got better education skills on high level for particular job. This can be of help to both the business and the person him/her self. If there was good education in maybe Peckham at Harris there will be more people who will move to Peckham and so the business near or around will get more customers in the business. Attitudes to work Attitudes at the place of work depend on the different ways people in the business like the employees act ways and behaviour to the customers. If it’s in the bad way them the business will lose customers and so the businesses will not have money. People with right attitudes will be more productive. E.g. Foreigners who are prepared to work hard may be chosen over the local people. Religions: Religion can be a big factor to the business simply because there many people who are living in the area, many people have got different religions believes that they follow for the best of the religion towards the lord. I will give an example here of Muslim’s are have got different believes towards the business like all Muslims in the world do not eat pork as its part of their religion, they also don’t drink alcohol or even smoke, so all of this can affect the business that can that can be in the area of there are only Muslims around that place so if your business is selling one of the mentions things above you are most likely to het loses from them all since you not getting any customers. Another religion maybe Christian, there people don’t work on Sundays the reason being that is they also have to go to their place of worship so there is no need for them to go to work. This can affect the business because there will be no people helping in the store to serve the customers so therefore you need to do the job by yourself or ether close the shop on Sundays . Ethics This in the business are the values principals that run the business, these ethics affect the business through the fair trade in the business this is more like some business should offer fair price to their customers. This money can be used to save people in Africa. In the business like Tesco all the people who buy products like buying a biscuit at 50p and in the other shops the same biscuit is at 40p which means the shop that is selling the biscuit at 5op is having fair trade to help the other people and poor people in Africa. Environment: the business have to use resources well and minimising waste, some of the business wastes that can affect the environment and the bags that are been used in the business for the customers package. Business should make sure that they treat the customer’s very well attitude to male and female role. Attitude to male and female. In the past years, male use to work and the female used to stayed home to baby sit the children, but this time and year both the genders are now working and there more numbers of woman working that the man, women tend to be more attractive at their place of work than the woman Changes in structures In the UK, the highest numbers of people living in the country are the old. This is a impact to the business, if there more people in the country and they old people there will be more business springing up to care for the needs of the old people like transportation them in cars from home to their place of care, many of the old people will be an impact for the pharmacies and health centres, which will need to expand into many places Indore to meet the needs of old people department on the population. Legal factors Consumer laws and regulations: This is the act where the business like Tesco has got all the powers to make its consumers to be happy and taking responsibility of the business. This act has all the business to satisfy the customers quality which will means that all the goods that the consumers buys are meeting there satisfaction so they are happy with the business serving them as their customers. Tesco has to make sure that all the goods it selling to the consumers is fit for purpose. Like if you as the consumers you buying something from the business like you asked for an x box 360 but instead of the staff in the business giving you the right thing that you asked for they give you something else which maybe wrong that can be fit for purpose so the business has to be so careful with that when serving their customers. Employment law: Employees are also protected at their places of work and the employers according to the component of employment protection. Before the employees are asking for the job in any place of work in the business they should all have their personal details that can describe them when asking for the job to help the employers? Like they should have their forms with their full names, job tittle, hours they would be happy with in working, holiday pay entitlement all that is needed by the employers to know what you would really want when you are in the business (Tesco). The time of work like what time they should be coming at the work place and the time they will be leaving to get a proper rest to get ready for the next day. This can help the employees because it can really give them time to spend with their families like their children at home or even going out with their fellow staff members. Wage regulations, this concedes with the employees payment in terms of the money they are being paid for the job that they are doing. They should know how much salary they are getting hourly or monthly which can be done on time because it has to be of good help to them when they need it. Competition law: In the business environment there are laws that run how the business should compete with each other in terms of what they selling or doing. Law against the preventive business practices to reduce competition. This is like there are more than two shareholders agreeing over making the decisions of making prices on the goods that they are selling in their business. This can be controlled by measuring or looking at the amount of the product you bought how it was sold to you so that you can get it in the business so looking at the price you were sold make a decision on more than the price you as the shareholders you got it and then make the sell price in your business. In the business to manage the competition with other business all the goods that are sold in the business have to be so affordable to the customers so it’s so more different from the other business that sell the same thing as your business like Tesco its main competitors is asda, Sainsbury that are selling the same things so Tesco has to make its goods more affordable and provide good customer services to its consumers to win the other competition from the other businesses. Conclusion The result of the political analysis shows that the country is politically stable. But traditional values are still very important and need to be taken into account. If TESCO decides to expand, it must be aware that it is only allowed employing local workers. Also, the cheap local fund borrowing has the benefit over taxes and the good infrastructure is to be seen positively. In addition to that, the analyses showed that they are all people in the business and the outside the business and minded towards foreign operated supermarkets. The analysis of social factors shows that they are all about the living things like considering the services that are in the business and to the people how they are living like education, families, health and population in the country or in the particular .The high living standards in the country area advantageous for TESCO as they allow people to spend a large amount of their income on groceries that they are selling.

Day Lighting Study Case Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Day Lighting - Case Study Example In the figure, it is clearly visible that the sunlight reflecting directly on the floor at the base of the glass doors is brighter as compared to that pouring through the windows because of the filter. Moreover, the location of windows has been chosen very carefully so as to ensure that people sitting on the chairs get the light rather than the ones passing through the corridor. So the design selected to use the light is successful as it fulfills the purpose of its in-pour. Fig. 3 shows another room of the same building in which there is no in-pour of sunlight and the source of light is basically the reflection of sunrays from the floor of the terrace into the room. Here, the room has been purposefully designed in such a way that there is no direct in-pour of light and yet there is sufficient illumination in the room. In Fig. 4, the filtering windows have been placed atop the room to reduce the intensity of light without reducing the illumination. This is a successful use of light as the design ensures that the occupants of the building receive just the amount of light that is sufficient for them. Without the filter-glass on the top, space would be capturing direct sunlight that would be even more intensified after diffusing from the white floor. In Fig. 5, the room has been oriented in such a way that the window captures the brightness of the sunlight outside without increasing the glare inside the room. A very important purpose that this design serves is that it creates no significant shadows of the furniture placed in the room which enhances the visual appeal of the room. Since it is a room with a limited space, a heavy in-pour of sunlight would have been irritating for the inhabitants. In Fig. 6, the benefit of daylighting is shown as it provides the occupants of the building with a direct link to the evolving outdoor illumination patterns, thus creating productive and visually stimulating environment along with reducing the energy costs of the entire build ing. However, the architectural design shown in Fig. 6 is not successful as it provides no point of entry to the sunlight into the room, which is why the room is dark. Ideally, the design should have been such that allowed the sunlight to enter till the threshold of the room to provide it with enough natural light.

Comparison between Classical and Romantic Periods in Western Music Essay

Comparison between Classical and Romantic Periods in Western Music - Essay Example The movement was minimal as people performed and danced to the music. In contrast, during the romantic music period, both the performers and the dancers to the music became more physically involved in the music. More energy was used in playing the musical instruments and to dance to the music. Another major difference between the two periods is that, during the romantic period, music stressed strong emotions as opposed to music during the classic period. Music during the classical period did not portray deep emotions. About harmony, minor tones provided the music framework during the classical music period. Music composers wanted to have more control over their songs. The figured bass was not used during the classical music period. Amateur musicians were incapable of improvising from the bass. On the other hand, harmony during the romantic music period was expanded. Color and chromatic harmonies were added to the music. The performing mediums used during the classical music period were not as sophisticated as the accompaniments used during the romantic music period. They were, for example, made of wood and strings and were easy to operate as accompaniments to the music. During the romantic music period, accompaniments got more sophisticated. They included pianos and other digital equipment which were not easy to operate.Â
